Air Force Academy men's assistant coach killed in auto accident

Air Force Capt Levi Torkelson, an assistant coach for the U.S. Air Force Academy men’s gymnastics team, was killed in an automobile accident in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, Dec. 27. He was 29 years old.

Torkelson joined the Falcons’ coaching staff during the 2008 season after completing a six-month deployment to Iraq. He also served as an assistant coach during the 2001-02 season. In addition to his coaching duties, Torkelson worked in the athletic department’s scheduling and grading division.

A 2001 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, Torkelson was a four-year letterwinner on the gymnastics team. He was a two-time parallel bars champion at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships and was a nine-time USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-American.

Torkelson spent four years stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany and was deployed twice, once to Pakistan and once to Iraq. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the USAFE Arthur S. Flemming Award. He also won two Company Grade Officer of the Year Awards from the 435 Communications Squadron and the 86 Communications Squadron.
