Position Summary
The Chief Communications and Marketing Officer will lead the USA Gymnastics (USAG) communications, brand and reputation management initiatives, (including setting, implementing, and stewarding the overall strategic direction for the organization’s external messaging and marketing philosophy), and revenue growth mandates in the areas of partnership, membership, and events. Following significant and high-visibility changes in leadership and organizational oversight of USAG over the past year, this key senior executive team member will focus immediately on rebuilding the trust of its athletes, constituent members, and the American public through both internal and external communication, the creation of an actionable strategic road map in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games and beyond, and leading the efforts for an organizational re-brand and revenue growth plan that supports USAG’s mandate to protect its athletes from the medal stand to local gyms and serving its constituent base humbly with a mission-driven mindset.

Key areas of responsibility will include internal and external communications, public affairs, media relations, stakeholder relations, brand management, digital and social strategy and content, reputation management, crisis management, transparent stakeholder communications (including athletes, coaches, membership, gym owners, United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, other national governing bodies of sport, the International Olympic family, donors, partners, the American public, media, and the US Congress), and oversight of key revenue drivers to ensure the long-term financial viability of the organization. The individual in this role will lead with collaboration, transparency, and integrity.

Ideal Experience

  • Deep background overseeing complex communications programs and forward-thinking initiatives on behalf of high-profile properties or brands, including creation and execution of digital strategies and content. Priority will be focused on experience re- building and leading a trusted and robust internal and external communications or marketing department and with significant experience in developing media and marketing programs.
  • Significant experience in customer-facing, fast-paced marketing environments.
  • Expertise in building a corporate communications strategic plan.
  • Background in revenue-generating activities related to sponsorship, events, and membership.
  • Proven stewardship of a world-class communications and marketing organization, ideally as a visible, high- level executive responsible for building, developing and leading diverse teams while navigating transformation through collaborating with and influencing multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with the creation of strategic direction through to execution of all aspects of marketing including advertising, traditional print and broadcast, digital, and social media.
  • Excellent understanding of the media landscape, regionally, domestically, and internationally.
  • Innate ability to communicate with different stakeholders, negotiate influence, and build rapport at all levels.
  • Capability to distill information clearly and to explain complex issues with precision and consistency.
  • Experience with development and management of executive profiles.
  • Experience in crisis communication.
  • Experience with digital content development required.
  • Understanding of the athlete experience and the passion and commitment required to compete at the highest level of sport.
Requirements and Competencies

  • Possess a combination of detail orientation and big- picture understanding of strategy development.
  • Proven ability to manage a large variety of complex issues and projects calmly and simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated strength in leading teams, developing talent and building a culture of accountability and empowerment.
  • Established pattern of collaborative relationship- building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with complex revenue development and sponsorship engagement, global sports marketing, event management, and property promotion.
  • Demonstrated passion for competitive sports and athlete compassion.
  • Experience with sports sponsorship and the sporting world preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to build rapport with journalists and other key media.
  • Proven ability to understand and communicate the requirements (physical, mental, and emotional) to be an elite athlete on a global stage.
  • Proven crisis management skills.
  • Strong operational skills, including talent management and budget management.
  • Experience "selling" concepts and ideas, and to generate enthusiasm for events, people, and mission- driven organizations.
  • Proven communication skills with cultures and constituencies outside the United States preferred.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, PR or related field
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 10-15 years of experience in a communications or strategic marketing role, sports administration/ leadership or related transferable experience.
