Summary Description:
The Vice President of Athlete Health and Wellness is a senior member of the USA Gymnastics staff, reporting to the President/CEO. The primary responsibility of the VP of Athlete Health and Wellness is to develop and execute the strategy for the consistent provision of the highest quality care to address all aspects of athlete health and wellbeing for all disciplines within USA Gymnastics. In performing this role, he/she will lead a quality team comprised of multiple resources both within and outside of USA Gymnastics aimed at providing holistic care for our athletes including mental health care, sports psychology, nutrition, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, medical and athletic training services, life skills development, and more. The VP of Athlete Health and Wellness will also serve as the primary liaison for USA Gymnastics with the USOC, USADA and other agencies, committees, or organizations on matters related to health and wellness of athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development of a quality clinical team of medical professionals including MDs, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors, mental health professionals, nutritionists/dietitians, massage therapists that will provide continuity of the highest quality, holistic care for all USA Gymnastics disciplines. This team will necessarily be comprised of both internal and external contracted resources. The VP of Athlete Health and Wellness must develop and execute a strategy to use diverse resources to achieve the highest standards of consistent care and best practices.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance by all clinical personnel with Safe Sport policies and procedures.
  • Oversee contract compliance, insurance and credential verification for all providers.
  • Ensure appropriate clinical records are in full compliance with requirements of HIPAA and related privacy laws.
  • Provide education to Program Directors and other USA Gymnastics staff on developments in athlete health and wellness protocols and best practice.
  • Facilitate appropriate communications to USA Gymnastics membership on athlete care related issues, including advancements in safety or other health and wellness issues.
  • Monitor and advise on matters related to USADA, including prohibited substances and testing.
  • Serve as primary liaison with the USOC on all matters related to athlete care within USA Gymnastics.
  • Manage the Athlete Health and Wellness budget to ensure effective use of all resources.

Requirements/Competencies:

  • Demonstrated insight regarding the clinical care of elite athletes.
  • Demonstrated insight regarding the organization and coordination of medical care at sporting events.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sports performance principles and the application of sports science to maximize athlete health, wellness, and performance.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and demonstrated ability to successfully oversee multiple works streams at one time.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing teams of sports medicine providers.
  • Ability to develop programming that encompasses holistic athlete development which includes life skills development.
  • Proven ability to think strategically about health care services for athletes, and develop and execute operational plans that deliver quality, consistent care and maximize budgetary efficiency.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to work closely with multiple stakeholders including program directors, athletes, care providers, and external entities including the USOC.
  • Knowledgeable about HIPPA and related privacy laws.
  • Knowledgeable about the licensing and other accreditation laws and requirements for physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and chiropractors.
  • Knowledgeable about the Safe Sport movement and the requirements of Safe Sport policies.
  • Knowledgeable about USADA, prohibited substances, testing and related matters.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic and commitment to helping athletes develop at every level in a holistic manner.

Education and Experience

  • Masters or Doctoral degree in exercise science, athletic training, physical therapy, dietetics/nutrition, sport psychology, or MD/DO/DC with additional qualification in sports medicine required.
    • Candidates with Bachelor’s degrees and exceptional experience will be considered if they hold a supporting license or credential in one of the areas mentioned above.
  • Minimum 10 years, experience in sports science medicine, healthcare delivery or a related field, with at least 3 years of focus on youth sports.
