National Gymnastics Day - 9/13/2008

Want to participate in National Gymnastics Day, but aren't sure what to do? Here are a few ideas to get you started. Use National Gymnastics Day to help raise awareness for the sport of gymnastics and promote your club within the local community as well as to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.

  • Host an open house. Highlight one of your programs like preschool gymnastics. Include demonstrations by team athletes, mini-workshops for kids to try various activities, Tyson Fitness Challenge activities, raffles and more.
  • Cartwheel-a-thons, skill-a-thons, and other "a-thons" are always fun!
  • Host a team reunion or club anniversary celebration.
  • "Bring a friend" day is a great way to expose potential clients to your facility and programs.
  • Get the whole family involved with a "Family Fitness Day".
  • Coordinate with local community activities, festivals, or philanthropic events. Have members of your team and/or class programs perform exhibitions, facilitate Tyson Fitness Challenge activities, and more.

Children's Miracle Network: (CMN) - the alliance of premier hospitals for children - is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children's hospitals across North America. Each year the 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.

There's a Children's Miracle Network hospital dedicated to serving children in every community across the United States. These hospitals are committed to providing the best care for children when they need it. Children's Miracle Network hospitals:

  • Provide $2.5 billion in charity (uncompensated) care each year
  • Treat 98% of all children needing heart or lung transplants
  • Treat 88% of all children with cancer
  • Treat 76% of all children with cystic fibrosis
  • Treat 90% of all children with sickle cell anemia
  • Treat 72% of all children with pediatric AIDS
  • Devote 60% of their services to children under age six and 25% to newborns
  • Train 60% of pediatricians and 80% of all pediatric specialists
  • Educate families about issues like child safety seats, helmet safety and bike safety
We need your help to reach our goal of $1 million in donations to the Children's Miracle Network by 2008. Submit donations online or using the remittance form.

Membership: How to transfer or upgrade Athlete memberships

Two of the most common questions that are asked by our members are how to upgrade Introductory Athletes and how to transfer athletes' club affiliation.

New to your club transfers

When the new season opens clubs often receive a flood of new athletes that have competed with other gyms. It is important to transfer these athletes to your club and not to create them a new member record. When a new student joins your facility you have two options in order to transfer them to your club roster.

Option 1: Email the Member Services Department and provide the athlete name and member number (if it is known), and the club number they will need to be transferred into. USA Gymnastics will fulfill this request within 24 business hours.

Option 2: Transfers can also be done online using the following steps:

  • Step 1: Go to the USA Gymnastics website and click the gray Member Services Link near the top of the screen
  • Step 2: On the left hand side click on the blue membership button
  • Step 3: When the drop down menu appears click Athlete, then click Update Personal Information.
  •
  • Step 4: Please follow the instructions on the page.
Please note: the log-in information will require you to enter the athlete's member number and password (initially set to the 8 digit date of birth - mmddyyyy)

*The transfer will be instant and they will appear on the clubs athlete/introductory athlete roster to renew.

Upgrading Introductory Athletes to the Athlete membership

Another situation that clubs often encounter is the need to upgrade Introductory Athletes (level 1-3 & Prep-Opt) to Athletes (level 4 and up). The Introductory Athletes already have member numbers, so they are not considered "new" Athletes. At this time the option to upgrade them using the online registration system is not currently available, therefore you will need to contact the Member Services Department.

You may place these request via email at membership@usa-gymnastics.org or phone at 800-345-4719. Please note: If you have more than 3 that will need to be upgraded the request must be sent via email.

Please be sure to include the name and member number of the member you wish to upgrade. The request will be processed within 24 business hours. Once the upgrade has taken place they will appear on your athlete renewal roster to renew.

Special Note: For those that have already been paid as an Introductory Athlete for the 08-09 season, a completed 08-09 Athlete application form must be faxed and/or mailed to the USA Gymnastics Member Services Department with the upgrade fee of $38. This is not a function that can be completed online.

If you have any questions regarding the upgrading or transferring athletes please contact the Member Services Department at 800-345-4719.

Education: Hosting an Educational Course
Interested in hosting an educational course at your gym? Here's how!

Currently USA Gymnastics offers two courses that can be hosted by clubs: Safety/Risk Management Certification and Preschool Fundamentals: Hands on Training (HOT). Your willingness to provide your gymnastics club for either of these workshops is a contribution to the education of gymnastics professionals and a convenient way to bring education to your staff! Following is information you need to get started.

Safety/Risk Management Certification Course
This course is required for all Professional, Junior Professional, and Introductory Coach members of USA Gymnastics and is also very beneficial to all other gymnastics professionals. Visit the safety/risk management webpage for the course description.

Preschool Fundamentals: Hands on Training (HOT) Course
This course is a must have for preschool instructors and teachers and well as other recreational gymnastics instructors. Visit the preschool fundamentals: HOT webpage for a complete course description and other information.

Course Fees

  • There is no charge to the host club to hold a course in their facility!!
  • Each participant will pay a registration fee to attend the course. Registration fees are as follows:
    • Professional members, renewing with current safety certification - $5
    • Professional or Jr. Pro members, with new or expired safety certification - $70
    • Instructor, Athlete, and Introductory Coach members - $70
    • Non-members - $120
    • Onsite or late registrations - $25 (in addition to above cost)
  • For hosting a workshop, your gym will receive one complimentary registration with a minimum of 10 paid participants. Your complimentary participant MUST be pre-registered. If the course reaches 10 paid participants, the registration fee for your complimentary registration will be refunded.
  • The host club is responsible to help transport the course instructor to and from the airport, hotel and workshop, if necessary.
Registration Requirements

USA Gymnastics must receive a minimum of four paid pre-registrations in order to conduct a Safety/Risk Management course, but 10 or more pre-registrants are preferred and required to completely cover the instructor's expenses. According to our policy:

  • For courses with 10 or more participants, USA Gymnastics covers the instructor's travel expenses and honorarium.
  • If less than 10 participants attend the course, the instructor's travel expenses will not be covered by USA Gymnastics and the host club should cover these expenses (i.e. mileage or airfare, hotel, per diem).
  • If there are less than 4 pre-registrations for the course, the course will be cancelled. Cancellations will be determined following the online registration deadline, which would be the week of the course.
  • We need your help in promoting the workshop among your staff and with other clubs in your area.
  • All attendees should pre-register with USA Gymnastics. The registration deadline for faxed and mailed registrations is two weeks prior to the workshop and online registration closes one week prior to the course. Payment for the course is due at the time of registration. Pre-registration should also be done for any free registrants that you might receive for hosting a workshop. Just send in their registration with "Free for Host Gym" written in the payment section. If your course does not reach the required participation level you will be billed after the course for remaining expenses. Pre-registration is important to ensure the course can be held!
  • Minimum age for participation is 15.

Clubs: National Advertising Campaign and Website Launch

As featured in USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, USA Gymnastics, with assistance from the National Gymnastics Foundation and our sponsors, has launched a National Marketing Campaign centered on the sport of gymnastics. The campaign focuses on participation at the grassroots level and encourages interested kids and their parents to contact a USA Gymnastics Member Club in their area to get involved. As part of the ongoing National Marketing Campaign, a new website has been developed called BeginHereGoAnywhere.com.

This new website emphasizes the benefits gymnastics participants receive, in terms of physical development as well as psychological development, social interaction, positive character development and more. Quotes such as, "Balance Beam teaches grace and poise and, yes, even balance. Valuable life skills indeed" and "Still Rings help kids soar by teaching strength and control" are included for each gymnastics discipline and event and appear on the homepage of the website. Other sections of the website include:

Begin Here: this section includes a searchable list of all USA Gymnastics Member Clubs. By entering a zip code or city and state, users can find clubs in their area. The club's contact information is provided.

Go Anywhere: this section showcases individuals who have used gymnastics as a springboard to a better life.

Your Questions: this section includes answers to commonly asked questions about fitness and how gymnastics can be a valuable part of a child's life.

Club Directors: by entering your Member Club password, you can gain access to a marketing kit that ties into this marketing campaign, including radio public service announcements (PSA) and multiple sizes of print ads (that can be customized with your club logo).

The slogan, "Begin Here. Go Anywhere." expresses the idea that gymnastics helps prepare children for anything. Gymnastics helps develop children's physical fitness and instill important life lessons so that participants may continue in the sport of gymnastics, move on to be successful in other sports, excel in school activities, and advance to great careers.

Use the information from this website to help promote the sport of gymnastics and your club with current and prospective clients. In addition to the marketing kit, clubs can also purchase additional USA Today inserts and Begin Here Go Anywhere posters with the order forms linked here.

USA Gymnastics is a non-for-profit organization which is the sole national governing body (NGB) for the sport of gymnastics in the United States.
