General Description
The Chief Legal Officer is responsible for the legal affairs of USA Gymnastics and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. This role will work closely with and seek approval of the CEO in managing the aspects of reporting and adjudication activities that relate to a safe, healthy, and positive sport participation environment and will promote compliance with and enforcement of applicable USA Gymnastics rules, policies, and safe sport provisions in the gymnastics community.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and consult, advise and work closely with the President/CEO and other ELT members on all matters requiring a legal opinion
  • Report and work closely with the Board of Directors on legal, Safe Sport and other board matters
  • Work closely with the Safe Sport Department to ensure that USA Gymnastics is conforming to the highest standards of youth-serving organizations in providing safe environments for USA Gymnastics members including athletes, professional members, judges, clubs, and staff
  • As appropriate, serve as USA Gymnastics legal liaison with outside corporate counsel, the USOC, USADA, and other organizations that have business relationships with USA Gymnastics
  • Work externally in collaboration with USA Gymnastics outside legal counsel and ascertain and develop, in consultation with the President/CEO, how best to use outside counsel to achieve the most effective and best results for USA Gymnastics
  • Assist management on general contracts, third-party agreements and vendor supplier relationships
  • Oversee the communication to all relevant parties on progress and status of complaints, investigations, hearing procedures, appeals, and final resolution – maintain records on all cases
  • Draft and/or follow legislation, with a particular emphasis on any new proposed legislation that involves Safe Sport, Code of Conduct, etc.
  • Receive and distribute as appropriate any litigation demands; interface with risk management and insurance providers; coordinate communications with all relevant parties
  • Work with National Team staff on drafts of selection criteria for all international teams, coaching staffs, camps and other opportunities; liaise with outside counsel to finalize procedures.
  • Work with staff to draft and review documents utilized by each of our disciplines; identify potential issues; and participate in negotiations as appropriate
  • Respond to routine discovery requests
  • Oversee administration of human resource activities and personnel policies, and work closely with the President/CEO, human resources staff and outside counsel, as appropriate, on employment agreements, terminations, etc.
Other Duties:
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee, Governance Committee, and Ethics Committee
  • Mediate issues as necessary with general legal processes and efficiencies
  • Take on special assignments and serve on working groups as requested by the President/CEO
Qualifications:
  • Licensed to practice or advise on legal matters in the United States
  • Member in good standing of a State Bar Association
  • Minimum fifteen years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department with a strong background in litigation
  • Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctor from an accredited Law School
  • Familiarity with the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act preferred
  • Ability to work independently, while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of contacts, including outside counsel, executive and senior management, and business associates
  • Strong negotiating skills that lead to collaborative solutions
  • Sound and practical business judgment
