U.S. wins team bronze at 2018 RD761 Junior International Team Cup

KATY, Texas, Jan. 22, 2018 – The U.S. junior men’s team won the team bronze medal and claimed four individual event medals over the weekend at the 2018 RD761 Junior International Team Cup, which was held at the Leonard Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Riley Loos of El Dorado Hills, Calif./Technique Gymnastics, and Brody Malone of Summerville, Ga./Cartersville Twisters, each claimed two individual event medals.

In the team competition, the United States’ 234.650 total gave them the bronze medal, behind Japan (244.900) and Great Britain (241.550). John Chou of Cypress, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics; Asher Hong of Tomball, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics; and Joshua Karnes of Erie, Pa./Lakettes Gymnastics Academy; competed for Team USA, in addition to Loos and Malone. Malone was the highest placing U.S. man in the all-around, posting a 78.950 to finish sixth. Loos, who earned a 78.500, was right behind in seventh. Japan’s Taichi Adachi was the champion with an 82.500 total.

Loos tied for the floor exercise silver medal with a 13.600 and shared the vault bronze with his 13.500 score. Malone posted a 13.450 to capture the bronze medal on the still rings. He also took the silver medal on horizontal bar with a 13.100 score. The individual event champions were: Adachi, floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar; Jamie Lewis of Great Britain, still rings; and Shiga Tachibana of Japan, vault.

The RD761 International Junior Team Cup is named in honor of U.S. Junior National Team member Ricky Deci, who tragically passed away in 2001. The annual RD761 age group invitational competition supports the Ricky Deci Memorial Fund, which in turn funds a USA Gymnastics elite development training camp held each summer at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
