Gruszka, Sweeney and Waterson win bronze in Puurs

PUURS, Belgium, April 10, 2017 - West Coast Training Center’s Morgan Sweeney of Danville, Calif., Amanda Waterson of San Ramon, Calif., and Sophie Gruszka of San Ramon, Calif., won the bronze medal Sunday at the Puurs (Belgium) World Cup. Maren Merwarth and Jessican Renteria both of San Antonio, Texas/Acrobatic Gymnastics of San Antonio, just missed the medal podium, finishing fourth in the women’s pair competition.

The trio of Gruszka, Sweeney and Waterson qualified to Sunday’s final in second place after scores of 27.570, dynamic, and 28.590, balance. In the final, they earned a 26.410 for their combined routine to take the bronze medal. Belarus’ Julia Ivonchyk, Veranika Nabokina and Karina Sandovich won the gold medal, scoring 28.940, while Russia’s Polina Galanova, Viktoria Kudriavtseva, and Alina Petrova posted a 27.870 for second.

Merwarth and Renteria qualified to the final in second place with a total of 55.830 for their dynamic (27.680) and balance (28.150) routines. In the final, their 27.960 put them in fourth position. Belgium’s Noemie Lammertyn and Lore Vanden Berghe took the top spot at 28.760, followed by Israel’s Mika Lefkovtis and Roni Surzon (28.510) and North Korea’s Kum hwa Jong and Yun ae Pyon (28.460).
