Marmer wins three event titles at 2006 Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnast

TORONTO, Ont., Aug. 29, 2006 – Rachel Marmer of Los Angeles won three gold medals and one silver in the individual event finals at the 2006 Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Toronto, Ont. The USA won an overall total of four gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Junior Pan Am Championships.

Marmer won the rope, hoop and ribbon titles, finishing second behind Brazil's Angélica Kvieczynski in clubs. Marmer decisively won both the rope and hoop gold medals. In rope, Marmer's 14.400 was a complete point better than Kvieczynski's 13.400. Marlee Shape of Buffalo Grove, Ill., was third with 13.325. In hoop, Marmer posted a 14.175 for the gold medal, easily outdistancing Canada's Demetra Mantcheva at 13.550. Brazil's Natalia Gaudio and Angélica Kvieczynski tied for the bronze medal, finishing just short of Mantcheva at 13.500. Marmer's third individual event gold medal came in ribbon, with Brazil's Kvieczynski and Gaudio finishing second and third, respectively. Anastasia Torba, Orinda, Calif., was seventh.

Brazil's Kvieczynski won clubs with her 14.475. Marmer was second at 14.100, and Shape claimed her second bronze medal with her 13.725 total.

Earlier in the competition, the three-woman U.S. Team won the team gold medal, and Marmer finished second in the all-around.
