USA wins team title at 2006 Junior Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Champio

TORONTO, Ont., Aug. 28, 2006 – The USA won the team title at the 2006 Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Toronto, Ont., finishing ahead of Canada and Mexico. 2006 U.S. junior all-around champion Rachel Marmer of Los Angeles, Calif./Hollywood Academy of Gymnastics, earned the silver medal in the all-around competition. The individual event finals are tomorrow.

In addition to Marmer, the U.S. Team includes Marlee Shape of Buffalo Grove, Ill./North Shore Rhythmic, and Anastasia Torba of Orinda, Calif./Alegro Rhythmic. The U.S. Team won the gold medal with a 130.125 total. Canada was second with 127.700, with Mexico coming

In the all-around, Brazil’s Angelica Kvieczynski took the gold medal by posting a 54.625 total. Marmer scored 53.675 for the silver medal and Mexico’s Sofia Sanchez claimed the bronze with 51.950. The USA’s Shape and Torba finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

For the individual event finals, Marmer will compete in all four events, and Shape will participate in rope, hoop and clubs. Torba qualified for ribbon; she would have competed in other events but the competition has a rule that allows only two athletes per country to advance to the finals.
