2015-2016 Changes to Elite Development Program (EDP) and Jumpstart

With several years of camps and testing programs there is now enough data and evidence to review the EDP and Jumpstart programs. The USA Gymnastics Trampoline and Tumbling Elite Development Program (EDP) was intended to act as a bridge between the Junior Olympic and Elite Program. The Jumpstart program was developed to test, identify and recognize our best athletes at young ages and lower levels.

T&T administration has spent the last few months reviewing Jumpstart, EDP and the Elite Programs. This evaluation has placed scrutiny on the conceptual basis and the implementation efficacy of these programs. There was review across the board to the budgetary impact to both program and the individual athlete’s family.

The biggest factor that prompted the review and changes in our developmental pipeline programs was the success of the Youth Elite. Breaking apart the ages of the old Jr. Elite Program resulted in significant impact to the original EDP and Jumpstart concepts. The best 11-12 athletes accelerated into the Elite Program as Youth Elite and by-passed the EDP. Unfortunately, this left 2 camps on the calendar for the EDP program (who were levels 9-10) with not one developmental event for the non-national team Youth Elite athletes. It is the intention of the leadership of Trampoline and Tumbling to be responsive to needs and changes of the Elite Program and adapt as necessary.

The National Elite Program will be organized as follows:

USA T&T National Team

  • Senior Elite athletes are placed on team by competitive results and may be placed on team by Elite Committee using discretionary selection criteria. Jr. Elite athletes may be placed on National Team by Elite Committee using discretionary selection criteria.

All Youth Elite athletes NOT on Jr. National Team will be named to EDP.
  • EDP athletes will have developmental camp.

  • Fitness, strength & skill acquisition information and direction will continue to be provided to coaches as developmental tool for the younger athletes in the 9 & 10 JO levels.
  • State and Regional Chairs will be directed to use testing as part of training plans in State and Regional clinics.
  • State and Regional Chairs will use results to advise Elite Committee of potential athletes for EDP Program.
  • There will no longer be National Jumpstart testing program or Jumpstart Camps.
