Gymnast Hornbeek passed away

Heidi Hornbeek of Phoenix, a decorated gymnast at the University of Arizona and a member of the U.S. National Team in 1992-93, died at the age of 36. A memorial service for Hornbeek was held on Dec. 27 in Phoenix.

Hornbeek was a six-time All-American for the Wildcats from 1996-2000 and she won the NCAA floor exercise title as a freshman. She won the AAI American Award in 2000 as the nation's top senior gymnast. She graduated from Arizona and went on to medical school in Kirksville, Mo. She was a surgeon in the Phoenix area.

Hornbeek was inducted into the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2005, and her leotard was retired and hung in the rafters at McKale Center in 2007.
