Two-time Olympian Banner services scheduled for Dec. 11

Services for Larry Banner, who competed for the United States at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Dec. 11, 2013, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church (1200 Maze Blvd.) in Modesto, Calif. Banner, 77, died on Nov. 28.

Banner spent his early years recovering from polio and his young adult years winning national and international championships. The UCLA graduate and former multi-sport athlete was the 1960 U.S. vault champion. He went on to represent the USA at two Olympic Games and served as the team captain at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.

Following his competitive years, Banner coached part-time at the University of California-Irvine, where he taught for 32 years. Banner was also awarded the International Gymnastics Federation's Insignia of Merit as a world-class gymnast in 1960. He was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1993.

Banner made an appearance on The Lucy Show in 1969 with Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett.

Banner is survived by his wife, Marti, their two children Eric and Bret, and grandchildren Emalee and Ryan.
