LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Nov. 24, 2013 – Acrobatic gymnastics celebrated its 40th birthday, according to the International Gymnastics Federation. On Nov. 22, 1973, the International Federation of Sports Acrobatics was created in Moscow, Russia. IFSA had 54 national federation members prior to merging with the FIG in 1999, and has since become known as acrobatic gymnastics. The discipline joined USA Gymnastics in 2002. The USA has enjoyed international success, winning three gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the World Championships.
Acrobatic gymnastics now has representation on all five continents and is increasing in popularity. Performances at the 2012 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships in Orlando, Fla., featuring the popular mixed pairs and women's trio groups, have surpassed more than 1 million views on the FIG's YouTube channel.
