American Classic Bounds Into Boston March 14-16

Indianapolis Acaa The nation’s top gymnasts descend on the Boston area March 14-16 for the 2003 American Classic at Burlington High School.


The American Classic, featuring Junior and Senior elite gymnasts, is the first of two qualifiers for the 2003 U.S. National Championships, June 18-22 in Milwaukee. The Classic also serves as the first step for U.S. athletes seeking to represent the United States at the 2003 Pan American Games, Aug. 1-17 in Santo Domingo or the 2003 World Championships, Aug. 16-24 in Anaheim.


"The American Classic is very important for the U.S. gymnasts," said Kathy Kelly, USA Gymnastics Senior Director for Women's Programs. "With the World Championships and Pan American Games being held this year, we expect all of the athletes to be well prepared for the first qualifying meet."


Expected to compete are 2002 World Championships gold medalists Courtney Kupets (Gaithersburg, Md./Hill’s Gymnastics) and Ashley Postell (Mitchellville, Md./Capital Gymnastics NTC), 2002 World Championships bronze medalist Samantha Sheehan (Villa Hills, Ky./Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy), current U.S. All-Around Champion Tasha Schwikert (Las Vegas, Nev./Gymcats), and U.S. Junior All-Around Champion Carly Patterson (Allen, Texas/World Olympic Gymnastics Academy).


Alicia Sacramone, 15, of Winchester leads the local charge. Sacramone, a former Gymnastics and More gymnast now competing for Brestyan’s American Gymnastics in Ashland, finished 22nd in the All-Around at the 2002 U.S. Junior Championships.


Also on the schedule is the American Challenge on Sun., March 16, a pre-elite competition for athletes seeking to move up to the elite level.

Friday, March 14 Junior International Competition 1-4 p.m.

Friday, March 14 Senior International Competition 7-10 p.m.

Saturday, March 15 Team Cup 7-9 p.m.

(Top 12 Seniors and top 12 Juniors from Friday's competition)

Sunday, March 16 Challenge Competition 1-4 p.m.

(National level elite competitors)
