1960 Olympian Don Tonry, 78 years old, recently passed. Services for Tonry will be held next week. Additionally, Tonry represented the United States at three World Championships (1958, 1962 and 1966).
Tonry was an NCAA all-around champion at the University of Illinois, but his tenure at Yale University as coach and director of physical activity that spanned more than four decades is what defined his career. The 1960 Sullivan Award finalist published two books, Woman’s Gymnastics-Vaulting and Balance Beam and Women’s Gymnastics-Uneven Parallel Bars and Floor. Tonry was an International Gymnastics Federation certified judge and served various international meets since his certification in 1969. He was also a National Gymnastics Judges Association President’s Award recipient.
The wake will be held at the Beecher and Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT 06518, (203) 288-0800 (just off Exit 61 of route 15 or the Wilber Cross (Merritt) Parkway on Tuesday, May 28, from 5-8 p.m.
