Douglas named AAU Sullivan Award semi-finalist; online voting begins March 5

INDIANAPOLIS, March 5, 2013 – 2012 Olympic all-around champion Gabrielle Douglas of Virginia Beach, Va./Chow's Gymnastics and Dance, has been named an AAU Sullivan Award semi-finalist, the Sullivan Committee announced this week.

Online voting for the 83rd AAU James E. Sullivan Award begins today, Tuesday, March 5, 2013. The voting tool will be posted online at Online voting will close on March 17, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

A member of The Fierce FiveAcaA that won the Olympic team gold in London, Douglas made history at the 2012 Olympics when she became the first African American to win the women's all-around Olympic gold. She's also the first U.S. gymnast to win both the Olympic team and all-around titles. Douglas was voted the Associated Press' Female Athlete of the Year and the Women's Sports Foundation's "Sportswoman of the Year" for 2012.

Three gymnasts have previously won the Sullivan Award: Shawn Johnson (2008), Paul Hamm (2004) and Kurt Thomas (1979).
