USA gymnasts advance to trampoline World Cup finals

SAVOGNIN, Switzerland – The USA’s Ryan Weston of Pocatello, Idaho, and Erin Blanchard of Lafayette, La., will compete in the individual trampoline final round of the World Cup event in Savognin, Switzerland, on Aug. 26. Weston teamed up with Chris Estrada of Lafayette, La., to qualify for the final round in synchronized trampoline. The top eight in the preliminary rounds advance to the final round.

Weston finished fourth in the preliminary round, posting a 69.2 that included the top compulsory score of 30.3. Blanchard finished in eighth place with a 65.00 score. Yasuhiro Ueyama of Japan leads the men's competition with a score of 70.5, while China's Xing Ping Zhong is the women's leader at 67.00. Scores from the preliminary rounds do not count in the final round.

The field of competitors includes 64 men and 42 women. In individual trampoline, Amanda Bailey of Levelland, Texas, was 17th with a score of 62.1, while Kevin Strickland of Middletown, N.J., and Estrada both had costly errors in the optional routine and finished well out of the running. In women’s synchronized trampoline, Blanchard and Bailey finished in 10th place.
