Safety/Risk Management Certification Course Questions and Answers

(Revised 1-Aug-2008)

Q: Is Safety/Risk Management Certification required?
A:
Safety/Risk Management Certification is required for all Professional, Junior Professional and Introductory Coach members. The certification must be completed and passed before the membership will be active.

Q: I registered for a live Safety/Risk Management course. Can I take the online course instead?
A:
Yes, it is possible to transfer your registration from a live course to the online course. It is done as a two step process. First, register and pay for the online course. Second, use the Course Cancellation and Refund Form to request a refund for the live course. A $5 processing fee will apply to the refund.

Q: I'm a coach/instructor with 10 years experience teaching gymnastics. Can I be grandfathered into the Safety/Risk Management certification course?
A:
No. There is no grandfathering for course completion.

Q: Do I need to study any materials prior to taking the online course or attending the live Safety/Risk Management Course?
A:
No. The online course will cover all of the information on the exams. A .pdf version of the Safety/Risk Management book will be available for download from the online course. For the live course, the book will be provided to you at the course and the course instructor will cover the material on the exam.

Q: How can I renew my Safety/Risk Management certification before it expires?
A:
The Safety/Risk Management course is available as a live or online course. Individuals may take either course to become certified or renew their certification. The cost for the online course is $65. Current members can recertify by taking a live course for a cost of $5 (save $5 by registering for the live course using our online registration). You may register and complete the Safety/Risk Management course up to one year before your certification expires. Once you renew your certification, four years will be added to your previous certification expiration date.

Q: In the past, re-certification at live courses was free for current Professional members. Why is there now a fee?
A:
Effective August 1, 2008, the cost of registration for a live course will increase by $5 because of the addition of a processing fee for forms that are mailed or faxed to the USA Gymnastics office. Individuals may register for a live course using the online registration system and receive a $5 discount, therefore, the course registration fee using online registration is still the same (i.e. current Professional members may register for a live course through our online registration and the course fee remains $0).

Q: I failed the Safety/Risk Management Certification course test. Do I have to re-register and pay to take the course again?
A:
Yes. For both the online and live course participants have two chances to pass the course exam. If the exam is failed twice, the individual must re-register and pay for the course again.

Q: How often do I need to take the Safety/Risk Management Certification course?
A:
Safety/Risk Management certification is valid for 4 years.

Q: How do I know when my Safety/Risk Management Certification expires?
A:
Your Safety/Risk Management Certification expiration date is printed on your course certificate and card and for Professional members your expiration date is also printed on your membership card. If you do not have access to those sources, you may contact Member Services at 1-800-345-4719 and ask them to confirm your expiration date.

Q: Do I need to be a member to take the online Safety/Risk Certification course?
A:
Yes. You will need a valid USA Gymnastics member number (username) and password to register and take the online course.

Q: How long will I have access to the online course?
A:
You will have access to the online course for 30 days from the date of registration. All course work and exams must be completed during that time. Extensions are not permitted. If you need more time in a course, you will need to register and pay for the course again.

If you complete the course before the expiration date, you will still have the remaining time (a total of 30 days from the date of registration) to access the course. You can review course materials or reprint your certificate during this time period.

Q: Can my club host a Safety/Risk Management course?
A:
Yes. For more information on hosting a course at your gym, contact the Educational Services Division or contact a National Instructor in your area.

Q: I am a gym owner. Some of my teenaged student-athletes assist with various classes at my gym. Can they take the Safety/Risk Management course?
A:
Course participants must be at least age 15 at the time of the course. No participants under age 15 are permitted to register or attend a course.

Q: What do I get for completing the Safety/Risk Management course?
A:
Upon successful completion of either the live or online course, participants receive a certificate and card indicating their certification. This course will also bring you one step closer to completion of USA Gymnastics University certification.
