Gymnasts of the Week – Feb. 5-7, 2021


Gymnast of the Week awards are given by conference offices. More will be added throughout the week as they become available.

National
NCAA Gymnast and Rookie of the Week
Michael Jaroh - Penn State
Jaroh earned at least a share of first place in three individual events and added a runner-up finish in another to help Penn State improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. His best performance of the day came on high bar, which he won with a score of 14.0. That currently ranks as the nation's second-best score on high bar this season. Jaroh shared first-place honors in two other events, doing so with a score of 14.55 on vault and 14.1 on pommel horse. His runner-up showing came on rings with a score of 13.75.

NCAA Specialist of the Week
Cooper Giles - Nebraska
The sophomore earned the pommel horse title after notching a career-high score of 14.10. A Lake Zurich, Ill. native, Giles had the highest score on pommel horse throughout the NCAA for week 4 of competition. Giles currently has the second-highest score in the NCAA for the 2021 season.

Big Ten Conference
Gymnast and Freshman of the Week
Michael Jaroh - Penn State
  • Won three event titles and finished second on a fourth apparatus to help the Nittany Lions to a conference win over Nebraska on Sunday
  • Earned victories on the vault (14.55), pommel horse (14.1) and high bar (14.0), with the high bar score also the second-best mark in the nation this year
  • Took second on the rings (13.75)
  • Earns his first career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award
  • Last Penn State Gymnast of the Week: Stephen Nedoroscik (Feb. 4, 2020)
  • Collects his first career Freshman of the Week award


Eastern College Athletic Conference
Gymnast of the Week
Matthew Davis – Army
Davis won rings with a 13.5 and placed second on vault with a stuck landing and in the all-around against California. Matthew continues to make noise nationally, having the third-highest all-around score in the country over the weekend.

Specialist of the Week
Matthew Martin – Army
Martin scored a 13.5 on pommel horse to capture the event title and provide an important boost to the Army lineup. His score on the event was one of the top scores on the event in the country. Matthew also competed on rings and parallel bars for the Black Knights.

Rookie of the Week
Connor Cavanagh – Army
Cavanagh continued his consistency for the Black Knights this past weekend against California. He hit his ring routine capped off with a stuck dismount, nailed his vault, and came up clutch for the team on pommel horse. He showed his value and veteran mindset, being one of the top scores on all three events he competed for Army.

Gymnast of the Week
Yu-Chen Lee - California
California junior Yu-Chen Lee (Taiwan, Taipei) won the floor by three-quarters of a point (13.500), in addition to a title on parallel bars (13.250), second-place and career-best high bar (12.750) and third-place still rings (12.550), as the Bears defeated No. 12 Army (Feb. 6). This is the first career MPSF weekly award for Lee.
