U303 - NYSPCC Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Workshop: Safeguarding Your Athletes and Your Gym
Course Description
Sexual Abuse Prevention workshops available at the 2019 National Congress and Region’s 1 and 6 Congresses. The workshops are provided by the Athlete Assistance Fund (The AAF) in partnership with The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (The NYSPCC).

Since one in five children will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday, protecting child athlete from child sexual abuse can seem like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. This 90-minute, interactive workshop will dispel myths and deliver general preventive education about child sexual abuse. Coaches and gym owners will have the necessary tools and knowledge they need to keep the children entrusted to their care safe and their gyms and employees safeguarded.

Topics specific to child sexual abuse in sport will be discussed, including: appropriate athlete-coach boundaries, recognizing signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse, and why competitive athletes are at an increased risk for experiencing abuse. Participants will leave the workshop empowered to better recognize, respond to, and prevent abuse. Attendees and will receive a certificate of participation to display in their gym, as well as, USA Gymnastics University credit.
