Stein was a member of the 1995 World Championships team. He won his first international competition in 1994 as he took the gold all-around medal at the Pacific Alliance Championships. He is a pre-med major and would like to become an orthopedic surgeon. He works at a V.A. Hospital in the anesthesia department for experience and is currently applying to medical schools. Stein's younger brother Jeff competes at Cal Berkeley, and his older sister was a competitive figure skater who now coaches.
