Betsy is the oldest of three children of Sandy (business manager) and Cecily (candlemaker) Hamm. Her twin brothers, Paul and Morgan, are also gymnasts and members of the U.S. Junior National Team. Her dad was a state champion diver. Betsy became a four-time NCAA All-American with her performance at the 1998 NCAA Championships in Los Angeles, where she was on the silver-medal team and she won the national title on balance beam.
