INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 22, 2010 – 2008 Olympic horizontal bar silver-medalist Jonathan Horton of Houston and his 2008 Olympic team bronze-medalist teammates Alexander Artemev of Lakewood, Colo., and Kevin Tan of Fremont, Calif., are among the 136 male gymnasts currently in the field for the 2010 Winter Cup Challenge, Feb. 4-6, at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. Five members of the 2009 World Championships team are also entered, including Tim McNeill of Falls Church, Va., who was seventh in the all-around finals. In addition, 11 members of the senior national team and 13 gymnasts on the junior national squad are in the field.

Performances at the 2010 Winter Cup Challenge will help determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team through the 2010 Visa Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 11-14. Ten will qualify for the team using the National Team Points System, and the remaining five will be selected by the Men’s Program Committee from among the Winter Cup participants and athlete petitions.

In addition to Horton and McNeill, the members of the 2009 U.S. Men’s World Championships Team are: Jake Dalton of Sparks, Nev.; Steven Legendre of Flower Mound, Texas; and Danell Leyva of Miami. Leyva finished fourth on the horizontal bar, and McNeill competed in the pommel horse finals in addition to the all-around. Legendre qualified for the floor exercise finals, and Horton advanced to the final rounds for the all-around and high bar. All are members of the men’s senior national team.

The other five members of the current senior national team who are slated to compete are: Kyle Bunthuwong of El Cerrito, Calif.; Alexander Buscaglia of Oak Brook, Ill.; Tim Gentry of Plano, Texas; Glen Ishino of Santa Ana, Calif.; and Brandon Wynn of Voorhees, N.J.

Thirteen from the junior national team are also expected to participate: Dylan Akers of Kingwood, Texas; Wyatt Aycock of Orlando; Jesse Glenn of Northridge, Calif.; C.J. Maestas of Corrales, N.M.; Jake Martin of Oviedo, Fla.; Maximilian Mayr of Miami; Sean Melton of Orlando; Samuel Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif.; John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y.; Cameron Rogers of Charlotte, N.C.; Jesse Silverstein of Suffern, N.Y.; Christopher Turner of Fremont, Calif.; and Jordan Valdez of Louisville, Colo.

The USA’s reigning tumbling champion Kalon Ludvigson of Pocatello, Idaho, is also entered in the competition.

The Winter Cup competition schedule is: preliminary rounds, Feb. 4 – 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.; and final round, Feb. 6, at 7:15 p.m. Tickets will be on sale on competition day.

The top 42 gymnasts, according to the Men’s Program Committee’s points ranking system, will advance to the final competition, along with the top three gymnasts on each apparatus. The all-around and individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score. For information on the points ranking system used for advancement to the final round, as well as the one for determining the national team, go to http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/men/events/2010/winter_cup.php.
