NORMAN, Okla., April 10, 2015 – The University of Oklahoma won its ninth National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics Championships team title today inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma. The title was the first since 2008 and the sixth overall for head coach Mark Williams. The Sooners totaled 447.050. Stanford University finished second (440.450), followed by Penn State University with 439.500.

In the all-around competition, U.S. Senior National Team Member Akash Modi of Morganville, N.J./Stanford University, won the all-around title. The University of Illinois’ C.J. Maestas and Bobby Baker finished second and third in the all-around, respectively.

Competition wraps up in Norman tomorrow with the individual apparatus finals, starting at 8 p.m. ET.

Oklahoma led for most of the day and entered the final rotation leading Penn State by 2.950 points. They posted a 73.350 total on the event to clinch the title. William Clement finished the rotation with a stuck layout full-out to the delight of the home crowd, leaving no doubt that the Sooners had won the title.

Oklahoma began on the floor exercise where they totaled a 76.250, punctuated by stuck dismount landings from Colin Van Wicklen and Kanji Oyama. Oklahoma led after the first rotation. On the pommel horse, Oklahoma posted a 72.650 behind 15.000-plus scores from Allan Bower, 15.050, and Michael Reid, 15.200.

In the third rotation, the Sooners ran away from the pack with a spectacular rotation on the still rings. Two-time defending NCAA still rings champion Michael Squires nailed a 16.450, executing a back uprise to inverted cross and sticking his layout full-out dismount. Hunter Justus, 15.450, Thao Hoang, 15.100, and Kanji Oyama, 15.100, also broke the 15.000 mark to help the Sooners to a 76.800 total on the event. They led Stanford by nearly two-and-a-half points at the midway point.

Four of the five Oklahoma vaulters broke the 15.000 barrier with Josh Yee getting the rotation underway with a stuck Yurchenko double full and a 15.000. Oyama finished off the rotation with a second stuck landing on a sky-high Kasamatsu one-and-a-half. He posted a 15.350. The Sooners totaled 75.000 on the event.

The Sooners moved to the parallel bars in rotation five where they tallied a 73.000 total. Resnick and Akers led off with scores of 15.100 and 15.050, respectively, while Berardini closed the rotation with a 14.900. OU closed the meet with five hit routines on the high bar.

Modi posted a 90.450 in the all-around to take the all-around crown. His scores were: 15.600, floor exercise; 14.850, pommel horse; 14.600, still rings; 14.600, vault; 15.750, parallel bars; and 15.050, high bar. Maestas’ 88.650 put him second, while Baker scored 88.550 for third.
