Indianapolis – Amanda Lentz, 22, (Seminole, Texas) won the 5th Tumbling World Cup Final on Saturday, December 16 in Dessau, Germany, defeating current World Champion Elena Bloujina (RUS) by one tenth of a point. Lentz scored 26.76 to Bloujina’s 26.66.
Lentz completed a round-off, flic, full-in back-out straight, whip, whip, flic, flic, half-in half-out straight to claim the title.

Wilson 6th, Ray 8th in Event Finals

Blaine Wilson finished sixth in the event finals for vault and Elise Ray was eighth on beam during the final day of gymnastics competition at the Sydney SuperDome.
 
Wilson scored a 9.362 for both vaults and Ray had a wobble on beam, scoring a 9.387.
This is the first time since 1972 that the U.S. has not collected a medal in Olympic gymnastics.

Irina Karavaeva (RUS) took the gold medal at the first Olympic trampoline competition Friday evening. Oxana Tsyhuleva (UKR) won the silver and Karen Cockburn (CAN) won the bronze.

Romania Sweeps, Equipment Causes Controversy

Led by Andreea Raducan, Romania swept the women’s all-around competition Thursday night, but it was faulty equipment that was the real story.
During the evening’s competition, it was discovered that the vault horse was set 5 cm too low, resulting in numerous falls and low vault scores during the first and second rotations.

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team finished the team finals in fourth place Tuesday evening, while Romania claimed the team gold medal scoring 154.608 points.
Russia was second with 154.403 points, China third with 154.008. The U.S. totaled 152.933 points, Spain, 152.113 and Ukraine, 151.846 for a sixth place finish.

Tasha Schwikert, 15 (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been added to the 2000 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team, replacing Morgan White, 17 (Fairfield, Ohio).
White sustained a stress fracture of the second metatarsal of the left foot.

Jaycie Phelps Bows Out of U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Indianapolis – 1996 Olympic gold medalist Jaycie Phelps announced today that she will not attempt to make the 2000 Olympic gymnastics team.
Phelps, 20, withdrew from last month’s John Hancock U.S. Gymnastics Championships after re-inuring her right knee. Throughout her competitive career, Phelps has struggled with knee problems. Her left knee has been surgically repaired three times.
While I am disappointed I will not compete in Boston at next week’s Olympic Team Trials, I have no regrets about dedicating the last nine months of my life to achieve this goal,& said Phelps, who won gold in 1996 in Atlanta….

Orlando, Fla.- Elena Produnova of Russia and Eric Lopez of Cuba were crowned winners of the 25th Visa American Cup today at the T.D. Waterhouse Centre.

Chris Young Sidelined by Training Injury

National Team Member Chris Young underwent surgery Monday evening at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., to repair a right Achilles tendon, injured during a training session Friday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Young was practicing a tumbling pass into the training pit.
Young’s doctors estimate that recovery will require between four to six months of rehabilitation. U.S. Olympic Training Center Coach Ron Brant said that Young is in good spirits after surgery.
“We are very hopeful that Chris will return in time for Sydney,” said USA Gymnastics President Bob Colarossi. “USA Gymnastics will support him as much as possible on the road to recovery.”
