STUTTGART, Germany, Oct. 11, 2019 – Sam Mikulak of Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, finished in seventh place in the all-around at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to the medal ceremony, he was awarded the 2019 Longines Prize for Elegance as the championships’ most elegant and charismatic male gymnast. Yul Moldauer of Arvada, Colo./University of Oklahoma, placed 16th in the all-around. Competition continues tomorrow with the first of two days of event finals at 4 p.m. local time. Tomorrow, both 2019 World team and all-around champion Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre, and 2019 World team gold-medalist Jade Carey of Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Sunrays, are competing in the women’s vault final, with Biles and Sunisa Lee of St. Paul, Minn./Midwest Gymnastics Center, in the uneven bars. The men’s events are floor exercise, pommel horse and still rings. U.S.-based fans can watch the finals live at 10 a.m. ET on the Olympic Channel. NBC will have tape-delayed coverage of the World Championships team and all-around competition at 3 p.m. ET.
In the all-around, Mikulak posted a six-event total of 85.691 for seventh, and Moldauer tallied a total of 82.330 for 16th. Russia’s Nikita Nagornyy and Artur Dalaloyan finished first and second, respectively, at 88.772 and 87.165. Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev was third at 86.973.
Mikulak’s and Moldauer’s individual event scores are below.
- Sam Mikulak: all-around, 85.691; floor exercise, 14.400; pommel horse, 13.000; still rings, 14.000; vault, 14.266; parallel bars, 15.325; and horizontal bar, 14.700 (top score).

The Longines prize recipients receive a trophy, Longines watch and a check. France’s Melanie de Jesus dos Santos was the women’s 2019 prize winner. Mikulak is the first U.S. man to receive the prestigious award, and only three U.S. women have received the honor, Carly Patterson (2003), Shawn Johnson (2007) and Kyla Ross (2013). Earlier this year, the USA’s Laura Zeng received the Longines Prize for Elegance for rhythmic gymnastics, also the first U.S. rhythmic gymnast so honored.
On Sunday, Mikulak will also compete in the horizontal bar final, and Moldauer is the second reserve athlete for Saturday’s floor exercise final. In addition to Mikulak on the high bar, Sunday’s event finals also feature Biles and Kara Eaker of Grain Valley, Mo./Great American Gymnastics Express, on the balance beam, and both Biles and Lee on floor. The men’s events also include vault and the parallel bars.
The remaining finals schedule is: Oct. 12, event finals (men – floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings; women – vault, uneven bars), 4 p.m.; and Oct. 13, event finals (men – vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar; women – balance beam, floor exercise), 1 p.m. All times are local to Stuttgart.
