WEST POINT, N.Y., April 21, 2017 – Two-time defending NCAA team champions the University of Oklahoma posted the top score across two national qualifying sessions today at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Championships. Competition is being held at Christl Arena at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Tomorrow night, team, all-around and individual event NCAA national champions will be crowned with competition kicking off at 6 p.m. ET.
The Sooners posted an impressive 430.600, more than nine points better than the University of Illinois, (421.300), which took second. The University of Minnesota (420.100) was third, grabbing the final spot to tomorrow’s final round. The University of Iowa (412.500) missed the final in fourth place while the U.S. Naval Acadmey (400.650) took fifth place in the standings. The University of California at Berkeley was sixth, earning a 400.250 total.
OU came out of the gates strong with a 71.300 on the floor exercise, highlighted by a 15.300 from 2017 AT&T American Cup champion Yul Moldauer. Moldauer did not compete in the all-around today but posted the top scores of the session on the floor exercise and still rings. OU’s other event totals were: 71,300, pommel horse; 72.150, still rings; 73.600, vault; 72.200, parallel bars; and 70.050, horizontal bar.
In the first session, Stanford posted a team score of 420.450, followed by Ohio State University (414.650) and the University of Nebraska (413.050) to advance to tomorrow’s National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics Championships. Pennsylvania State University (410.500), the University of Michigan (406.950) and the U.S. Air Force Academy (403.800) rounded out the standings in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
