The Visa Championships in Houston kicked off on Wednesday, May 21, with media day at Reliant Arena. Representatives from local and national media organizations had the opportunity to watch podium training and speak with some of the athletes competing in the men’s senior division, as well as with their coaches.
In addition to the interviews at the arena, Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, and Kevin Mazeika, the men’s coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, joined Houston Mayor Bill White for a press conference at the Houston Visitors Center to welcome the Visa Championships to Houston.
Competition begins tomorrow with rhythmic gymnastics at Reliant Center and senior men’s artistic gymnastics at Reliant Arena. For rhythmic gymnastics, the juniors compete at 9 a.m., and the seniors compete at 2:30 p.m. The senior men’s competition begins at 7 p.m.
