INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Sept. 14, 2007 — 2007 world all-around champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, has been selected as ABC World News’ “Person of the Week” for her accomplishments at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Johnson also is the 2007 world floor exercise champion and a member of the U.S. Team that won the women’s world team title. She will be profiled on tonight’s broadcast.
Johnson helped the U.S. women win the team gold medal, which is just the second ever for the USA and the first team title won at a World Championships held outside of the United States. Johnson is just one of four U.S. women to win the coveted world all-around title, joining Kim Zmeskal (1991), Shannon Miller (1993-94) and Chellsie Memmel (2005). She also won the world floor exercise gold medal.
