LAS VEGAS, Feb. 4, 2012 – John Orozco of the Bronx, N.Y./U.S.O.T.C., hit the jackpot Saturday night inside the Las Vegas Sports Center, performing cleanly on all six events to win the 2012 Winter Cup Challenge all-around, parallel bars and horizontal bar titles. Orozco topped the all-around standings with a two-day total of 180.700, followed by Steven Legendre of Port Jefferson, N.Y./Team Hilton HHonors (University of Oklahoma), 175.200, and Brandon Wynn of Columbus, Ohio/Team Hilton HHonors (Ohio State University), 175.000.

“I’m glad I got to start off like this in a new year,” Orozco said, “Hopefully, I can keep it up throughout the whole year up to the Olympic Trials.”

Leading after the first day of competition, Orozco never looked back, leading from start to finish in the final round and began his day on the high bar with a nearly flawless routine, punctuated by a stuck, full-twisting, double layout to earn a 15.750. Orozco’s 30.300 two-day total earned him a share of the high bar event title with Danell Leyva of Homestead, Fla./Team Hilton HHonors (Universal Gymnastics), who received second place after a tie-break.

On the floor exercise, Orozco earned a 14.550, and then, moved to the pommel horse, where his clean form gave him a 15.350. In the fourth rotation, Orozco moved to the still rings, sticking his front double pike dismount, and posted a 15.050. Executing a front handspring front double full on vault, Orozco scored 15.400. Orozco finished the competition on the parallel bars, executing a peach half, Dimitrenko and a giant Suarez for a 15.250, giving him a 30.650 total on the event and the parallel bars title.

Legendre started strong on the still rings, posting a 14.050. With a 16.550 score for his front handspring, double front half-out vault, Legendre posted the highest score of the meet and won the event with a 32.450 total. Legendre was solid on the parallel bars and high bar, earning scores of 14.200 and 14.650, respectively. In rotation five, Legendre moved to the floor exercise, where he is a three-time world championships finalist, dazzling the crowd with his two-and-a-half-twisting double back flip to score 15.100 and claim his second event title of the meet (31.000). Legendre closed his competition in Las Vegas on the pommel horse with a 14.150.

Starting on the pommel horse, Wynn posted a 13.100. In the second rotation, on the still rings, Wynn put on a clinic, performing an Azarian to planche, an Azarian Maltese and a nearly stuck double twisting double backflip for a 15.600. His 30.950 gave him the event title. Wynn scored 15.850 on the vault, 14.750 on the parallel bars and 14.300 on the high bar. In the final rotation, Wynn mounted the floor exercise with a front full to double front and earned a 14.400 to secure the all-around bronze medal.

Glen Ishino of Santa Ana, Calif./University of California – Berkeley, swung with precision and clean form on the pommel horse, earning a 31.450 two-day total and the event title.

Following the competition, Wynn, David Sender of Savoy, Ill./University of Illinois, Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./University of Illinois, Samuel Mikulak of Ann Arbor, Mich./University of Michigan, Jesse Silverstein of Spring Valley, N.Y./US Gymnastics Develop Center II, Ishino, Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./University of Michigan, and C.J. Maestas of Corrales, N.M./University of Ilinois, were named to the U.S. national team, along with all seven members of the 2011 World Championships team.
