Gene Whelan

Two-time All-American and Nissen Award-winner Dr. Gene Whelan assembled a career that took him to international success, as he was a member of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team and a part of the men’s team that won the gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.

He competed for two schools, first at the University of Massachusetts and then at Penn State University, where he shined. He was an international master of sport from 1974-1977 and went into environmental engineering in the Western US after retiring from the sport.
