Lyle Welser

Following a stint as a short-term coach at the University of Illinois, Lyle Welser moved to Atlanta, where he started the gymnastics program at Georgia Tech University. There he coached for 25 years and collected three Southern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League silver medals and one Georgia Gymnastics Association AAU Championship. In 1965, Welser won the SIGL Coach of the Year Award.

Outside of coaching, Welser made numerous contributions to the sport, such as arranging the first collegiate meet and the first AAU meet in the South, and he served as President of the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches.

He founded the National Gymnastics Clinic, where he is an honorary life president. The 1968 Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame inductee twice served on the NCAA Rules Committee as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee.
