Fred Roethlisberger

In a career that spanned more than 40 years, Fred Roethlisberger acted as an athlete, coach, and administrator.

He competed at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and was a member of both the 1966 World Championships Team and the 1968 Olympic Team. He was a three-time gold medalist in the 1967 Pan American Games, which was the most productive single event of his career.

In 1971, he started as the men’s gymnastics coach for the University of Minnesota, a position he held through 2004. His teams won 11 Big Ten Championships during his 33-year tenure. Roethlisberger served on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors, as well as on the Men’s Program Committee, of which he was also chairman. Roethlisberger was also the Region IV Junior Olympics director.
