

A part of the gymnastics community since the 1960s, Anderson has been an athlete, coach, club owner, event director, contributor and supporter of the sport throughout his life. Beginning as an athlete who was a two-time YMCA National all-around champion (1968-69), a three-time NCAA All-American in 1968 and a Pan American Games team silver medalist in 1971, Anderson’s reach in the sport of gymnastics has touched nearly all aspects. He went on to serve as head coach of the 1983 Pan Am Games gold medal-winning women’s team and work in coaching positions at Towson University and the U.S. Naval Academy. For 20 years he served as owner of MarVaTeens Gymnastics and is credited with establishing the “Capital Cup” in 1981 format for women’s competitions, which is the most utilized women’s competitive format to date. At USA Gymnastics, Anderson held roles on the Board of Directors as Elite Coaches Representative and Secretary, the USA Gymnastics Foundation Board and served in director and chairman positions in Region 7. He received multiple awards throughout his career, including the USA Gymnastics Service Award in 2006 and the Shirley Marshak Award in 2007.
