WILLIAMSBURG, Va., March 27, 2009 – The College of William & Mary’s Derek Gygax and Arizona State University’s Alex Gaudour of Arizona State University won the varsity and club all-around titles, respectively, at the 2009 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships held at William & Mary’s Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va.

Gygax won the varsity all-around with an 84.150 total. Springfield College’s Ty Evans and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Dylan Parrott finished second (82.700) and third (81.300) behind Gygax. In the club all-around, Gaudor captured the title with an 81.350 total. Sam Softich of the University of Washington was second at 79.250, with teammate Joey Lawrence third at 78.050.

Gygax, a junior from Stevensville, Md., is just the fourth William & Mary gymnast to win the all-around title at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships and the first since Ramon Jackson earned the second of his two-consecutive all-around golds in 2006.

Gygax finished in the top 10 in five of the six events. His scores for each event were: 13.800, floor exercise; 14.00, pommel horse; 13.850, still rings; 14.750, vault; 13.600, parallel bars; and 14.150, horizontal bar.

Gaudour won the collegiate all-around title with the third highest all-around score in the meet. His individual event scores were: 13.750, floor exercise; 12.000, pommel horse; 13.700, sill rings; 14.900, vault; 13.550, parallel bars; and 13.450, high bar.

The championships, sponsored by USA Gymnastics, the national governing body for gymnastics in the United States, is divided into two categories, varsity and collegiate. The varsity competition is for Division I, II, or III, four-year institutions with gymnastics as a varsity sport, and the collegiate team category is for two-year or four-year degree-granting schools with gymnastics as a club sport. Each category produces its own winners for the team and individual competitions.
