INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 3, 2013 — The first of two Women’s National Compulsory Workshops, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., was a big success. More than 1,600 gymnastics professionals attended the sold-out workshop. The second national workshop, taking place in Reno, Nev., begins June 7. The workshop provides participants with a clear understanding of the 2013-21 USA Gymnastics Women’s Junior Olympic Program: concepts, compulsory exercises, the interpretation of the text, and technical execution of the skills. Coaches at the workshop earn W311 University credit and judges earn Continuing Education Clinic credits.

Every eight years the USA Gymnastics modifies the Women’s Junior Olympic program. 2013 is the first year, and the new routines will be in full competition mode beginning August 2013. This time, USA Gymnastics not only changed the routines, but also reorganized the Women’s Junior Olympic levels to provide a more comprehensive progression by offering five levels of compulsories and five levels of optionals.

The new system promotes great long-term benefits aimed at keeping athletes motivated with smoother transitions from level to level and improved stair-step progressions within all the levels. The second national workshop is June 7-9 in Reno, Nev. Although both the Orlando and Reno workshops are sold out, the Regional Compulsory Workshops are additional opportunities to learn the new compulsories.
