Pan-American Interclub Championships
The Pan-American Interclub Championships event was held in Monterrey, Mexico, in late November 2000. There were 60 gymnasts from Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, USA, and Venezuela competing. Excalibur, from Virginia Beach, Va., took first place in the team competition and was the first team from North America to win the team finals!
Excalibur’s 12-year-old Marcia Newby won four of the five gold medals including vault (9.225), bars (9.533), and floor (9.5), and all-around (37.411). She also earned the silver on beam with a score of 9.166.
Teammate Samantha Hartman, also 12, took a bronze on the beam with an 8.916 and Jenni Callihan, 12, was eighth on bars with an 8.433. The delegation also included coaches Dena Walker and Gustavo Moure and judge Shirley Tranquill.
