The men’s and women’s event finals of the Coca-Cola National Gymnastics Championships were held Sat., June 8, at the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.

For the women, Dominique Dawes won all four events making her third national vault, bars, beam and fourth floor exercise title in her career. This is also the second time that Dawes has won all four events at a national championships.
Dawes said, “I’m glad I hit and did the best I could. Floor was one of my best events tonight.”
Amanda Borden, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu and Jaycie Phelps qualified to event finals but scratched prior to the competition due to minor injuries. The athletes and coaches did not want to aggravate the injuries with the Olympic Trials only three weeks away.
For the men, Jay Thornton won floor exercise with a score of 9.737. Josh Stein won pommel horse with a 9.712 and Kip Simons earned first on rings with a 9.637.
Jair Lynch, who just missed earning a medal on parallel bars at the 1992 Olympic Games, won the parallel bars event at the National Championships and said, “I pulled out all the stops today. This routine has the full complement of skills and I hope to showcase this routine at the Olympic Games.”
1996 Coca-Cola National Champion Blaine Wilson won vault with a score of 9.537 and Bill Roth earned the gold on high bar with a score of 9.687.
John Macready who won a silver and two bronze medals, said, “Today was icing on the cake. I wanted to go out and have fun, put on a good show and win some medals.”
John Roethlisberger, who won the bronze medal on pommel horse, said, “It was a real tough day for me. I’m glad I’m in one piece. Mentally and physically it just wasn’t there today.”
