Josh Karnes – Penn State

  • Claimed the all-around title and two event crowns to help No. 4 Penn State finish second in a tri-meet with No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 6 Ohio State on March 11 in Columbus, Ohio
  • Posted the nation’s highest all-around score this year with a career-high 83.900
  • Added wins on the parallel bars (14.550 – his sixth consecutive score of 14.000 or higher) and the high bar (13.550), while placing second on the rings (13.600), vault (14.450) and third on the pommel horse (14.100)
  • Earns his second career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award

Freshman of the Week
Matt Underhill – Penn State

  • Registered his second consecutive victory on the rings during a March 11 tri-meet against No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 6 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio
  • Tallied a winning score of 14.000 on the rings
  • Also finished fourth on the vault (14.400), recording his seventh vault score of 14.000 or better this season
  • Captures his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week award

Aiden Cuy – William & Mary
Cuy posted a season high score in the all-around with a 75.95 while helping the Tribe to their second best team score of the 2023 campaign. Highlights of Cuy’s effort include a 14.1 in the vault (equallying a career high) and a 13.3 on the parallel bars.

Specialist of the Week
Johnathan Pinc – Army
Freshman Johnathan Pinc stuck his vault to match his career-high 14.6, post the highest score in the ECAC, and earn him the top vault score by a rookie in the country over the weekend.

Rookie of the Week
Matthew Petros – Navy
The freshman continued posting high scores for the Mids this week in a tri-meet versus Stanford and Air Force. Petros’ individual effort was led by a fifth-place result on the high bar with a score of 13.1 (4.4 difficulty and 8.7 execution). His execution score was second on the event only to Stanford’s Nick Kuebler’s 8.8. Additionally, Petros turned in a 14.05 vault and a 12.1 parallel bars routine.

Gymnast of the Week
Vitaliy Guimaraes – Oklahoma
Oklahoma fifth-year senior Vitaliy Guimaraes (Arvada, CO) completed the all-around for the first time this season, registering a score of 83.050 to lead victories over host No. 6 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State (Mar. 11). Guimaraes won the vault title with a 14.500, and posted a 14.050 on floor. He led off four events for the Sooners, particularly setting the tone on parallel bars with a 13.700 when OU needed a big score to clinch the meet. His 13.850 on pommel horse tied a season-high. This is the third career MPSF weekly award for Guimaraes.

Patrick Hoopes – Air Force
Air Force sophomore Patrick Hoopes (Lehi, UT) scored a program record and first-place 15.300 on pommel horse, and the Falcons’ first 15-point score of the season in a road tri-meet at No. 8 Navy, with No. 2 Stanford (Mar. 11). Hoopes’ 15.300 is the highest team score tallied under the new scoring system. This is the first career MPSF weekly award for Hoopes.

Stanford freshman Asher Hong (Tomball, TX) won the still rings title with a score of 14.650 in a tri-meet which featured the host No. 8 Navy and No. 9 Air Force (Mar. 11). He also finished second on floor at 14.400, and fifth on vault with 14.550 and parallel bars with 14.150. This is the sixth MPSF weekly award for Hong.
