HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 12, 2010 – Rebecca Bross of Plano, Texas, finished the first day atop the senior all-around rankings with a score of 60.400 at the 2010 Visa Championships at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. The final day of senior women’s competition is Saturday, Aug. 14. The men’s competition wraps up on Friday, Aug. 13, and competition in rhythmic gymnastics continues through Saturday.
Bross scored a 15.000 on vault for her double-twisting Yurchenko; a 15.150 on uneven bars; a 15.500 on balance beam complete with her standing Arabian and double Arabian dismount; and a score of 14.750 in the floor exercise. On both uneven bars and balance beam, Bross had the highest score of the meet.
“I am going to do the exact same thing on Saturday that I did today, with some improvements,” said Bross, who was second in the all-around at the 2009 World Championships. “This is one piece of the puzzle on the way to Worlds.”
Mattie Larson of Los Angeles/All Olympia finished second in the all-around with a score of 58.200. Larson scored a 15.000 on her Yurchenko double-full vault and on floor exercise, where her double layout mount helped secure the top score of the day on that event.
Alexandra Raisman of Needham, Mass./Brestyan’s Gymnastics, finished in third place in the all-around with a score of 57.550, with vault (15.050) as her highest score of the day. She also earned a 13.650 on uneven bars; a 14.200 on balance beam; and a 14.650 on floor exercise.
2008 Olympic team silver-medalist Alicia Sacramone of Winchester, Mass./Brestyan’s, claimed the top score on vault with a combined average of 15.350 for her front-handspring-front Rudi and a double twisting Yurchenko.
2008 Olympic team silver-medalist and 2009 World all-around champion Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind./Sharp’s Gymnastics, only competed in balance beam and scored a 13.150.
The U.S. women’s senior champion will be determined by the combined scores from today and Saturday, Aug. 14.
Universal Sports will televise live the men’s and women’s senior competition on Aug. 12-13, respectively, on its television network and website, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Live, prime-time coverage of the final day of the women’s competition on NBC Sports begins at 8 p.m. on Aug. 14. NBC Sports will broadcast action from the men’s competition at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 15. 1984 Olympic gold-medalist Tim Daggett, Olympian Elfi Schlegel, Andrea Joyce and Al Trautwig are the announce team for both the NBC and Universal Sports broadcasts.
Hosted by 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin and three-time Olympian John Roethlisberger, “Around the Gym” will be a fun and informative way for TV viewers to see additional interviews and commentary from the Visa Championships. “Around the Gym” will air prior to the Universal Sports telecast on Aug. 12-13 and after competition concludes on Universal Sports on Aug. 12-14.
