ZURICH, Switzerland, Nov. 3, 2019 – Four-time World-medalist Jade Carey of Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Sunrays, and 2019 U.S. pommel horse bronze-medalist Allan Bower of Chandler, Ariz./University of Oklahoma, teamed up to win the title at the 2019 Swiss Cup at the Hallenstadion in Zurich, Switzerland. Team USA topped Team Ukraine in the final of the Swiss Cup, a team competition that featured one female gymnast and one male gymnast from the same country going head-to-head with other teams.

The combination of Carey’s vault score of 14.625 and Bower’s floor mark of 14.450 totaled 29.075, putting them ahead of Ukraine’s Diana Varinska’s and Oleg Verniaev’s total of 27.650 (Varinska, 12.350/uneven bars; Verniaiev, 15.300/parallel bars). Team Switzerland was third at 29.250 (Giulia Steingruber, 14.600/vault; Oliver Hegi, 14.650/parallel bars), with Germany in fourth (Elizabeth Seitz, 14.900/uneven bars; Andreas Toba, 13.950, still rings). In the semifinals, Team USA topped Germany, 27.250 to 26.950, to advance to the final, and Ukraine bested Switzerland, 27.750 to 24.200. The individual semifinal scores were USA – Carey, 12.950/balance beam, and Bower, 14.300/pommel horse – and Germany – Seitz, 12.700/balance beam, and Toba, 14.250/horizontal bar; and Ukraine – Varinska, 12.700/balance beam, and Verniaev, 15.050/pommel horse, and Switzerland – Steingruber, 11.750/balance beam, and Hegi, 12.450/horizontal bar. The preliminary round scores were not immediately available.

The teams that competed in the Cup were Canada, France, Germany, Korea, Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine and United States. The competition featured an elimination system. After the first two rotations, the teams ranked ninth and 10th were eliminated. The third rotation was the semifinals that featured four countries, with two countries going head-to-head, and all teams started at zero points for the semifinals. In the final round, the winners from the semis battled for the top two spots, while the two other countries vied for third and fourth place. Each country’s gymnasts performed one after the other, and their scores were added to get the final score.
