ANNAPOLIS, Md., March 26, 2022 – One day after securing their second-straight team championship, five Navy Midshipmen added apparatus titles Saturday, as the 2022 USA Gymnastics Men’s Collegiate National Championships concluded in Annapolis, Md. Iowa’s Amari Sewell (junior, Bowie, Md.) was the sixth event champion crowned on the day.

Navy’s program also picked up several 2022 season awards in conjunction with the event. Dhiren Lutchman (senior, Beltsville, Md.) was selected the Outstanding Senior Athlete, while head coach Kip Simons was named the National Coach of the Year. Program’s assistants Craig Holt and Mike Reid added National Assistant Coach of the Year honors.

Inside Halsey Field House, Navy’s Syam Buradagunta (sophomore, Westborough, Mass.) notched the top spot on floor exercise with a 13.650. Air Force’s Jacob Sampier (sophomore, Chicago, Ill.) was second with a 13.475, while Springfield’s Charlie Kramer (sophomore, Minnetrista, Minn.) rounded out the top three with a 13.325.

On pommel horse, Navy’s Daniel Clark, Jr., (senior, Avon, Mass.) delivered a 13.675 to edge teammate Ronan McQuillan (sophomore, Katy, Texas, 13.475) for the title by two tenths of a point. Arizona State’s Clayton Cunningham (sophomore, Gahanna, Ohio) was third with a 13.025.

The Midshipmen’s Joshua Williams (senior, Cypress, Texas) led the way on still rings with a 13.950. He bested teammate Alexander Brown (senior, Lafayette, La.) and Air Force’s Garrett Braunton (sophomore, Olympia, Wash.) who were second and third with scores of 13.300 and 13.250, respectively.

Sewell’s 14.575 on vault outpaced Minnesota freshman Kellen Ryan (Janesville, Wis.) who finished second with a 14.525. Springfield’s Dominic Ramalho (junior, Hollis, N.H.) picked up one of two podium finishes on the day, landing third with a 14.200.

Lutchman just edged Air Force’s Oliver Zavel (sophomore, Austin, Texas) 13.950-13.925 for the parallel bars title. Ramalho (13.325) was third.

Navy’s Giovanni Gambatese (junior, Pewaukee, Wis.) captured the horizontal bar title with a 13.600. Zavel (12.820) and Sewell (12.775) rounded out the podium, each adding a second piece of hardware to their haul.

The 2022 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships are set to take place April 8-10 at Cornell’s Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y.
