NEW YORK, N.Y. — We have witnessed her grow up in front of our eyes and have shared in the excitement as she became the most decorated American gymnast, male or female, in the history of the sport. Now, Shannon Miller, is ready for her next challenge…marriage!

On September 27, 1998, Shannon Lee Miller became engaged to Chris B. Phillips. Mr. Phillips, 25, is a fourth-year medical student enrolled at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. The couple met last fall while Ms. Miller was visiting a physician friend at Oklahoma University Hospital after completing the John Hancock Tour of World Gymnastics Champions. As fate would have it, Mr. Phillips was on rotation with one of Ms. Miller’s doctors and the two began dating within a few short months. The Oklahoma native will graduate and officially become Dr. Chris Phillips in May.
Ms. Miller, 21, currently attends the University of Oklahoma, where she is a business major. Last May she released her first book, “Winning Every Day,” published through Bantam Doubleday Dell. In “Winning Every Day” Ms. Miller shares her secrets of how commitment, goal-setting and a firm belief in herself have helped her to achieve her dreams. She continues to make personal appearances and give motivational speeches to corporations and universities across the country and serves as the national spokesperson for Drug Free Youth USA and the Children’s Miracle Network.
Ms. Miller has earned more Olympic (seven) and World Championship (nine) medals than any other American gymnast. In her career she has won an astounding 58 international and 49 national competition medals, culminating with two gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games as a member of the “Magnificent Seven.” At the ‘96 Games she won the gold in the team event and individually on balance beam, both firsts for American gymnasts.
Although the couple hasn’t finalized a date, they plan to wed in the summer of 1999.
