When Marie Seaquist, owner of Elite Dance Studio in Amityville, N.Y., was diagnosed with breast cancer in December, her friend and partner, Christine Winston, owner of Elite Gymnastics also in Amityville, N.Y., decided to do something at Elite to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Winston knew that together they could make a difference. The kids and their families embraced the opportunity to help out and get involved. Elite Gymnastics’ annual Flip into Spring Invitational Meet was changed to a “Flip for a Cure” theme. More than 800 gymnasts attended and $2 from each entry fee was donated to the cause. As a result, Stephanie Ginsberg, chairman of Pink Promises, received a check for $10,000 to go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
At the meet they sold programs, chocolate bars, pink-ribbon-themed merchandise and baked goods. Fantastic baskets and prizes were generously donated and raffled off. At the gym, a Promise Wall of Hope was put up in the hallway where people could purchase and create a card to be displayed with messages to Marie or in honor of someone else affected by this disease. Winston donated $1 from each child’s February gymnastics tuition. “Flip for a Cure” and “Dance for a Cure” T-shirts were created and continue to be sold.
Together they flipped and danced for a cure and showed how to make a difference in so many lives.
