HUNTSVILLE, Texas, Jan. 24, 2017 – The first developmental camp of 2017 just ended at USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center, at the Karolyi Ranch, a U.S. Olympic Training Site. Forty athletes participated in the five-day camp with two-a-day training sessions led by National Team Coordinator Valeri Liukin and the national coaching staff.

Each camp begins with physical abilities testing. Vika Smirnov of Shooting Stars Gymnastics placed first in testing followed by Mia Viola of Rochester Gymnastics Academy in second. Ui Soma of San Mateo Gymnastics was third.

Athletes verified their routines, including new skill combinations and upgrades, for the national coaching staff. Many of the athletes have new floor routines for the 2017 season. Athletes and coaches are fine-tuning their routines in preparation for the upcoming National Qualifiers in February.

Katelyn Rosen of Aerials Athletics Gymnastics was chosen as most improved athlete at camp by the national coaching staff.

The next developmental camp will take place in February.
