ANAHEIM, Calif. (March 8, 2016) – USA Gymnastics and Anaheim Sports announced today that the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships, the national championships for men’s and women’s gymnastics, will be held in the city of Anaheim for the first time. Scheduled for Aug. 17-20, 2017, the country’s best gymnasts will compete in the four-day competition at Honda Center. Also, the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center Aug. 17-19. 2013-15 U.S. men’s all-around champion and 2012 Olympian Sam Mikulak of Newport Beach, Calif./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center), 2004 Olympic all-around champion Carly Patterson, 2012 Olympic team gold medalist Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and legendary coach Bela Karolyi were on hand for the announcement.

"It is a privilege to host an event of this magnitude and we are thrilled to have helped bring another world-class event to the city," said Tim Ryan, President/CEO of Anaheim Arena Management. “Anaheim has continued to grow as a premier entertainment and sports destination, and we believe the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships will add significantly to that legacy.”

In addition to several post-Olympic gymnastics tour events, Honda Center also played host to the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships and the 2004 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team Trials.

"Anaheim has a storied history with USA Gymnastics at the highest level," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, “and bringing the P&G Gymnastics Championships is the next chapter. The U.S. women won the USA’s first women’s World team title at the 2003 World Championships, where Paul Hamm also made U.S. gymnastics history by winning the men’s World all-around crown. The 2004 Olympic Trials was an incredible success, and we expect the 2017 P&G Championships to be one of our best.”

"Anaheim and the greater hospitality industry is ready to roll out the mats to welcome the 2017 P&G Gymnastics Championships” said Jay Burress, president of Visit Anaheim. “Visit Anaheim recently established Sports Anaheim, a newly formed group with the primary purpose of attracting world-class sporting events to our destination. P&G’s Gymnastics Championships is our first announcement of what we know to be many, in attracting and hosting events that will fulfill this group’s mission of developing, marketing and selling the destination and positively impacting the greater community.”

The P&G Championships determines the men’s and women’s U.S. champions and the U.S. National Team for the junior and senior elite levels. The field will feature the country’s top gymnasts, and the championships also traditionally serves as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships.

Simone Biles of Houston, Texas/World Champions Centre, and Sam Mikulak of Newport Beach, Calif./Team Hilton (U.S. Olympic Training Center), won their third consecutive women’s and men’s U.S. all-around titles, respectively, at the 2015 P&G Championships. The roster of former U.S. all-around champions is a veritable who’s who of gymnastics, including: women – Jordyn Wieber, Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, Carly Patterson, Courtney Kupets, Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Kim Zmeskal and Mary Lou Retton; and men – Jonathan Horton, Paul Hamm, Blaine Wilson, John Roethlisberger, Mitch Gaylord, Peter Vidmar and Bart Conner. The U.S. Gymnastics Championships traces its history back to 1897 for the men and 1931 for the women.

The preliminary competition schedule, which is subject to change, for the four days is as follows.
