1992 Olympian John Roethlisberger from Minneapolis, Minn., won the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics men’s competition at the FleetCenter in Boston, Mass., in front of a crowd of 15,112.

1996 National Champion Blaine Wilson from Columbus, Ohio, finished second and John Macready from Los Angeles, Calif., followed in third.
About his performance, Roethlisberger said, “I was a little tired and had a problem getting up the intensity at the beginning but toward the end I could taste my spot on the Olympic Team. After the pommel horse I knew I just had to hold onto the rings and do a good vault.”
On his outlook for the team in Atlanta, Roethlisberger said, “We’re not going there to trade pins.”
Mihai Bagiu from Albuquerque, N.M., earned the last of the seven Olympic spots, winning the battle over Josh Stein from Houston, Texas, and Jay Thornton from Augusta, Ga., with a 9.650 on his final routine, the high bar. “I knew I was right on the bubble,” Bagiu said. “I tried to stay relaxed and go up and hit my routine like I do in a workout. I tried to not think about being on the bubble and once I got up, I just tried to relax and swing my routine.”
The seven highest ranked male gymnasts, based on 40 percent of their National Championships score and 60 percent of their Olympic Trials score, have been nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team, pending U.S. Olympic Committee approval. The men’s compulsory and optionals each counted 50 percent of the total score from the trials.
The nominated members include: Mihai Bagiu from Albuquerque, N.M., Jair Lynch from Washington, D.C., John Macready from Los Angeles, Calif., John Roethlisberger from Minneapolis, Minn., Kip Simons from Bloomsburg, Pa., Chainey Umphrey from Albuquerque, N.M., and Blaine Wilson from Columbus, Ohio.
1996 Men’s Olympic Team Coach Peter Kormann from Columbus, Ohio, said, “I think we have the best group of young men from the two sets of trials that were held. Every member of the team has competed in either a World Championships or an Olympic Games and every guy has proven he can win. After our two-week training camp we will not be walking out as seven individual guys in Atlanta we will be walking out as one American Team. There’s a lot of strength in that and I know they can feel it.”
Mark Williams has been named as the assistant coach of the 1996 Men’s Olympic Team. Williams coaches at the University of Oklahoma. He was an assistant coach to Kormann at the 1995 World Championships in Sabae, Japan. Kormann has selected Williams who has been reviewed by the Men’s Program Committee and approved by USA Gymnastics President, Kathy Scanlan.
