1992 Olympian John Roethlisberger from Minneapolis, Minn., leads the field after the men’s compulsory competition of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials-Gymnastics at the FleetCenter in Boston, Mass., in front of a crowd of 8,358. 1996 National Champion Blaine Wilson from Columbus, Ohio, finished second and John Macready from Los Angeles, Calif., followed in third.
“It’s do or die at the trials,” Roethlisberger said. “You have to hit your routines or you won’t advance. You have to let it all hang out. The trials are the highest pressure.”
The seven highest ranked male gymnasts, based on 40 percent of their National Championships score and 60 percent of their Olympic Trials score, will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team, pending U.S. Olympic Committee approval. The men’s compulsory and optionals each count 50 percent of the total score from the trials.
