At the completion of the compulsory round of competition at the 1995 World Gymnastics Championships, the U.S. men are in third place while the U.S. women are in second. Leading the men’s competition is Japan followed by 1994 World Champions, China. On the women’s side, defending World Champions, Romania, lead the competition, and Russia, following the U.S., is in third place.

The optional round of the team competition begins Oct. 5. The U.S. men will compete in optionals on Oct. 6, when the men’s World Team Champion will be decided. The U.S. women will compete in optionals on Oct. 7, and the women’s World Team Champion will be decided then.

The top thirty-six men and women will qualify for the all-around competition which takes place Oct. 8, while the top eight gymnasts on each event will qualify for the individual event finals on Oct. 9-10.

China’s Li Xiaoshuang leads the men’s all-around competition, followed by Hikaru Tanaka from Japan in second and Vitaly Scherbo from Belarus in third. John Roethlisberger (Minneapolis, Minn.) is the leading U.S. competitor in sixth place, Jair Lynch (Washington, D.C.) is in 24th and Blaine Wilson (Columbus, Ohio) is in 30th.

On the women’s side, Gina Gogean from Romania is in first, followed by Russia’s Dina Kochetkova. Defending World Champion Shannon Miller (Edmond, Okla.) is currently in third place. Other U.S. women who have competed all-around include: Dominique Moceanu (Houston, Texas) in seventh, Jaycie Phelps (Cincinnati, Ohio) in tenth, and Kerri Strug (Tucson, Ariz.) in 14th.
