Question: I heard some coaches joking around between classes. The jokes weren't appropriate for children, but some of the kids heard what the coaches were saying. What should I do? |

I would do two things: talk to your child and talk to the club. If your child heard the inappropriate remarks, talk to him/her in an age-appropriate way about what he/she heard. Sometimes it's hard to talk to our children about sensitive matters, but if they don't hear it from us, they'll hear it from somewhere else without our guidance on how to "process" that type of information.
Ask your child to tell you if he/she hears these types of comments again - whether at the gym or somewhere else. If you are comfortable bringing it up to a coach involved in the exchange, do so. Otherwise, you may want to talk to the club owner or manager and let him/her know of the exchange. They are the ones in the best position to talk to their staff about professionalism and conduct in the gym. Some gyms have "standards of behavior" or "codes of conduct" for their staff. Ask for a copy. |
